September is the best time of the year to plant lawn seed. There are a few reasons for this:
- It rains a lot in the fall
- Roots are established and then the grass goes dormant for the winter. In the spring, roots grow some more during the cool, wet months
- Crabgrass germinates in the late spring. Most pre-emergent treatments which are meant to prohibit crabgrass germination also prohibit grass germination. This is not an issue in the fall.
